What Does Merv Mean?

MERV is an acronym for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This is term coined by American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers as an indicator of the effectiveness of air filters.

Filter MERV’s can range from 1-20, with 1 being the least efficient at removing particulates, and 20 being the maximum typically used in electronics & pharmaceutical manufacturing cleanroom applications.

What Merv Rating Should I Be Using?

A MERV 8 filter begins to capture mold, spores, dust mite debris, cat and dog dander, hair spray, fabric protector, and other common household generated particulates. This filter provides an excellent option for homeowner’s who desire cleaner indoor air.

MERV 11 filters provide additional protection from particulates such as legionella, dust, lead dust, auto emission particulates, and nebulizer droplets. This efficiency is the optimal choice for households with individuals or pets that suffer from allergies and/or other respiratory ailments.

Why Don’t You Sell Filters Over 11 Merv?

For most residential homes, a MERV rating of 8-11 is most effective.

The higher the MERV rating, the more strain is being placed on the blower motor of your furnace. Most residential furnaces are simply not equipped to handle the demands placed by MERV’s in excess of 11.
